Possible Page Types

This is by no means a complete list, just a useful starting point. Viewing other websites will give many other possibilities.

Home Page
Every website needs a home page – it introduces the website and company so a user can decide if the site is relevant to them. It then directs interested users to relevant pages. As the first view of the site it also has to convince the user this site is worth spending more time on!

About Us
This page may be the front page for a series of pages establishing your credibility; giving the visitor reasons why they can trust you. If you have a well known name, customers will do business with you because you are known to them. However, most small businesses don’t have this luxury. The page explains who you are and how long you’ve been operating. To back up this page you may also include the following pages.

Our Team
If your business is trading on the reputation or knowledge of some professionals then this page can be used to give brief details of their skills and experience.

Memberships and Qualifications
Use if your business is a member of a trade organisation which gives your business credibility (e.g. Association of Plumbing and Heating Contractors (APHC) if your employees have recognised qualifications (CORGI registered), or your business is underwritten by guarantees (ABTA, ATOL).

Client testimonials
Positive recommendations and references from customers.

Case studies
Some business examples which illustrate the work your organisation has already done and demonstrate your capabilities.

News and Current Issues
This page encourages repeat visits to your site. News could be about your organisation – events, future productions, promotions, staff changes etc. and/or cover current topics in your sector. To be valid it MUST be kept up to date. New news must be published “hot off the press” whilst out of date information must be regularly purged to avoid your site looking badly managed and the knock on conclusion this might also apply to your business.

Free Information
Useful information that also encourages users to make repeat visits your site. This may be content that is updated on a regular basis or complex information that needs to be revisited as and when it is needed. This could be an update of changes to regulations impacting the site users or perhaps reference data spanning a complex subject.

Some sites make use of this information as a way of collecting marketing information. In exchange for registering their details visitors may get access to more information or be sent a regular newsletter. Note that collecting this information means complying with the Data Protection Acts and if access is gained through a username, then registration, login, deregistration and password management will have included in your design.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
This can be another way of keeping people coming back and of providing a service to existing customers about how to use or manage your products.

Ask A Question
Allow visitors to ask a question via a pre-prepared e-mail about your businesses areas of expertise. This may provide another opportunity to collect contact details and sell your products or services.

Private Space
A protected area used as communication channel for transferring information. Usually, between the company and clients, collaborators or other work colleagues.

Links
You may find added value by having links to other sites. For an accommodation site linking to a local attraction website is a useful way of showing what entertainment is available in the locality. However, be careful not to promote a rivals website in the process!

Products and Services Catalogue
This describes the goods and services you can provide and is an opportunity to promote your business to new customers. The top level page may introduce the product range, below which a hierarchy of pages drill down to individual services and products.

E-Commerce
The Products and Services Catalogue could be linked to an ecommerce system. Each catalogue item will need a catalogue number and price and an entry into a secure shopping/ordering/payment system.

Data Protection/Privacy Policy
If you are collecting and storing customer data, you should publish your policy on dealing with this data.

Terms and Conditions
The terms and conditions the company applies to contracts.

Site Map
This page is a complete inventory of all the website pages. Useful for large sites where there are not link to all other pages on every page.

Contact Us
Almost a mandatory, as one of the prime movers of a website is to try and generate contacts. This page will give all your contact details, address, phone, fax, and should also be allow email sending. There should be a link to this page from every other page.

Maps and Directions
If customers make personal visits to you then you need this page. It should have a map (eg GoogleMaps or MultiMaps) as a minimum and clear written directions would also be useful. If there are multiple locations then there should be an entry for each. For smaller organisations, this could be merged onto the Contact Us page.
